Dr. Cissell has a lifetime of experience around horses.  For over 25 years, she has been deeply involved in the horse world. Growing up on the East Coast, she competed through preliminary level in eventing, second level in dressage, and achieved the “A” rating in the United States Pony Club. Her horses were regularly treated with acupuncture and she developed an enduring interest in complementary therapies and animal healing. In 1999, she graduated with honors from Smith College, where she was captain of the intercollegiate riding team.

Dr. Cissell earned her VMD degree in 2004 from the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine and worked for a year at a premier equine practice in Charlottesville, VA. Attending veterinary school allowed Dr. Cissell to follow her dream of attaining certification in animal acupuncture, which she completed in 2005 at Colorado State University. Building on her initial certification, Dr. Cissell finished advanced equine acupuncture training at the Chi Institute in Florida. She also has high-level certification in equine craniosacral therapy, which she integrates into her work.

After running her own equine acupuncture practice for 2 years in Utah, Dr. Cissell re-located to Northern California with her husband, also Dr. Cissell, who is completing a veterinary radiology residency at UC Davis.

When not pursuing her interest in equine holistic health, Dr. Cissell can be found teaching a weekly yoga class in Woodland, CA, gardening in the UC Davis Arboretum, hiking throughout Northern California, and cross-country skiing. She is kept busy by her two standard poodles, 4 cats, and leopard gecko.
